Construction and remodeling can create fine dust that settles on surfaces and may reach returns, filters, and accessible HVAC components.
Before work begins
Close or protect nearby supply and return openings when appropriate and when the HVAC system is off. Ask the contractor how the work area will be isolated and how dust will be collected. Keep doors between the work zone and occupied rooms closed.
During the project
Use source collection for cutting and sanding whenever possible. Avoid running equipment in a way that spreads dust through the home. Replace temporary barriers if they tear or lose their seal.
After the work
Vacuum with appropriate filtration, then damp-wipe horizontal surfaces. Clean from higher surfaces downward. Check the HVAC filter and replace it when needed. Wash removable vent covers only when they can be safely removed and reinstalled.
When an inspection may help
Visible debris inside accessible ducts, persistent dust release from vents, unusual odors, or airflow changes are reasonable reasons to ask for an evaluation. Cleaning should be based on visible conditions and system needs rather than an automatic recommendation after every project.
