Your HVAC filter is one of the simplest parts of the system to maintain, but it only works well when it fits correctly and is changed when needed.
Start with the correct size
Turn the system off before opening the filter compartment. The dimensions are usually printed on the edge of the existing filter. Use the same dimensions unless a qualified HVAC professional has recommended a change.
Check it regularly
There is no single replacement schedule for every home. Pets, remodeling dust, wildfire smoke, household activity, filter type, and system runtime can all affect how quickly a filter loads. Look at the filter monthly and follow the equipment and filter manufacturer’s guidance.
Install it in the right direction
Most filters have an airflow arrow on the frame. The arrow should point toward the blower or air handler. A filter installed backward can restrict airflow or perform poorly.
Avoid assuming that higher is always better
A more restrictive filter is not automatically the right choice for every system. If you are considering a major change in filtration, ask a qualified HVAC professional whether the system can support it.
If a new filter becomes unusually dirty very quickly, airflow seems weak, or dust returns immediately after cleaning, an inspection can help identify whether another issue deserves attention.
